Today, I had a client ask me to explain…
…the basic set up for an up-coming product video shoot we were planning— they were unsure as to how I planned on capturing multiple audio sources using a DSLR, and they didn’t know how much equipment we were talking about. So, instead of typing out a bulleted list of how I planned on setting things up, I responded with this little sketch.
They got it right away.
A picture is worth a thousand words.
When I give presentations to design students I love to use things like this as an example of what I consider the essence of graphic design — being able to convey a message quickly and clearly using visual elements. But this is also a great example of why I feel that basic drawing skills are an absolute necessity for any designer or developer even in today’s digital age.
Yes we have things like Balsamiq Mockups (which is amazing and I use all the time, btw), but throughout my education and professional career, the ability to quickly convey my ideas effectively through drawing has been invaluable — brain storming sessions, logo ideas, website mock ups, and client meetings will all go much smoother if you can get your ideas out on paper quickly and effectively.
The drawings don’t have to be good…
…they just have to get the idea across.
Below are two of my favorite examples of quick sketches that I have done in a meeting to get an idea out in the open.
Ultimately each one was taken to the next level by another artist or designer that benefited from having a solid idea from which to work.
In each of these examples you can see the progression from quick sketch of the idea by me, to a more refined version by another artist and then finally the end product by the graphic designer.
So I say put down the mouse and pick up a pencil, you be a better designer, and you’ll have some fun!
